Identifiers

Identifying yourself when signing digitally

When signing documents digitally, it is essential to verify the identity of the signatory. There is a European law to enable cross-border digital business transactions in a secure and reliable manner. This can be divided into three levels: ordinary, advanced, and qualified. You can find more information about electronic signatures on the government website.

How do I identify myself?

I have been asked to identify myself in a signature request. How does this work?

Advanced signing

With advanced identification, the digital signature is linked to the identity of the signer. For this we use secure and reliable means of identification such as iDIN, CheckedID and Yivi. This way you can easily and legally sign documents according to European law. The steps required for each means of identification are described below.

iDIN

iDIN is an identifier that allows users to securely identify themselves online through their own bank. With iDIN, the signatory logs in to his or her bank, which confirms who he or she is. Thus, identity can be reliably established without the need for additional accounts or passwords. As with online banking, you are redirected to a secure login page from your bank. Thus, the login resources are used at your own bank; they do not end up at other organizations.

  1. Select the bank where you do your banking online.
  2. You will be directed to your bank's iDIN home screen.
  3. Log in using your bank's login tool (QR code, e.dentifier, TAN code, scanner, random reader, digipass or identifier).
  4. Personal data (name, address, date of birth) are displayed.
  5. Click agree.
  6. You will be redirected back to Zynyo's website and identified.

CheckedID

CheckedID is a mobile app that establishes the identity of users through a combination of an identity document and a facial scan. Therefore, when you have received an invitation to use CheckedID advanced digital signing, you need the CheckedID app on your smartphone. If you are already in the signing process, do not scan the QR code with your camera. The QR code only works in the secure environment of the CheckedID app.

  1. Download the CheckedID app for your Android phone or iPhone.
  2. Take a picture of the chosen ID proof.
  3. Hold the phone against the ID card if it has a chip in it.
  4. Take a selfie
  5. Click "Agree" and click "Submit. Verification is complete.
  6. In the Zynyo environment, scan the QR code with the CheckedID app.

Visit CheckedID' s website for a more detailed explanation of the steps.

Yivi

With Yivi, users can easily and securely log in online, identify themselves, give consents and sign. The free Yivi app allows users to retrieve identity attributes themselves via their smartphone and share or show only the necessary attributes with parties who want to know something about them. The personal data resides only on their own smartphone and is not managed anywhere in the cloud.

  1. Download Yivi from the AppStore (opens in new window) or Google Playstore (opens in new window).
  2. Choose a PIN and enter your email address.
  3. Retrieve your personal data from the Municipal Personal Records Database (GBA) using your DigiD.
  4. To do this, you log in once for free with the municipality of Nijmegen, even if you do not live in Nijmegen.
  5. In the Zynyo environment, scan the QR code with the Yivi app.
  6. Agree to share your personal information with Zynyo from the GBA to verify your identity for signature purposes.

Qualified signing

With qualified signing, the digital signature is applied using a qualified personal (cloud) certificate. This certificate is issued by a recognized trust service provider (TSP). This form of signing offers the highest level of security and is legally equivalent to a 'wet signature' within the European Union. Zynyo offers a choice of various recognized providers of personal (cloud) certificates, such as ItsMe, Vidua, Digidentity, and PrimeSign. Read more about qualified digital signing. Here you can also see how to apply for a personal certificate or a professional certificate.

Types of digital signatures

There are various types of identification methods (also referred to as authentication methods). Each has a different security level. These levels have been determined in the Netherlands and Europe on the basis of eIDAS (Electronic Identification and Trust Services). Zynyo uses various means of identification and can support all levels of digital signatures defined by eIDAS. View the various types of digital signatures here.
