Means of identification and types of digital signatures

The security level of the identification determines the legal validity of the signature.

Zynyo offers all services for advanced and qualified digital signatures. Both types of signatures are 100% reliable and have the same legal validity as a signature on paper, provided certain conditions are met. Zynyo uses reliable identification methods to guarantee the identity of signatories, ensuring that signatures are reliable and legally valid.

Electronic signature law

In the Netherlands, a document with a digital signature has the same legal validity as a document with a wet signature, provided that certain conditions are met. These conditions are laid down in the'Electronic Signatures Act'. This Act states that a digital signature has the same legal validity as a handwritten signature if the method of identification used is sufficiently reliable.

Identifiers

With digital signatures, the identity of the signatories is recorded using identification methods. There are various types of identification methods (also known as authentication methods). Each has a different security level. These levels have been determined in the Netherlands and Europe on the basis of eIDAS (Electronic Identification and Trust Services). Zynyo uses various means of identification and can therefore support all levels of digital signatures defined by eIDAS.

Advanced signature

Qualified signature

Advanced signing

For an 'advanced electronic signature', the digital signature is linked to the identity of the signatory. To do this, we use secure and reliable means of identification, such as CheckedID, Yivi, and iDIN. This allows documents to be signed easily and legally in accordance with European law. You can find more information about advanced signing here .

Qualified signing

The 'qualified electronic signature' is the highest level of digital signing. This level is the most secure and legally binding. To identify themselves, signatories must apply for a personal certificate. This can be done via ItsMe, Vidua, Digidentity, and PrimeSign. Professional certificates can be requested via KPN. Identification based on a PKI certificate

PKI stands for Public Key Infrastructure. A PKI-based personal certificate provides everyone with proof that a public key belongs to a specific person. The personal PKI certificate is the most secure form of identification.

Advanced and qualified digital signatures

The advanced digital signature uses a PKI certificate. The service provider issuing the signature then has such a PKI organization certificate. Qualified digital signatures take security one step further. In this case, the signatory has their own personal PKI certificate. This is the case, for example, for professionals whose identity must be verified, such as notaries, certified public accountants, and mayors.

Identification for qualified signing

A qualified electronic signature uses a qualified personal or organizational PKI certificate to identify the signatory. This certificate guarantees the identity of the signatory to the highest degree. A certificate is issued after identification by an authority accredited by the Dutch government. A number of PKI certificate providers offer the option of completing this process remotely by reading the NFC chip on an identity document, possibly supplemented by a video call.
